Am I the only one who gets extremely pissed off when I see an AE86 in same commercial as the 2014 Corolla? The AE86 deserves so much better than to be in a commercial with that car.

Yes, but not as pissed off as when I see an AE86 with rust and tasteless cosmetic mods selling for $12,000.

Well, the current Corolla IS the direct successor to the AE86, so it's not like it's all that odd.

Yeah, but the AE86 is awesome and the 2014 Corolla isn't. Maybe my parents are right and I am mentally insane...

There's a Corolla in that commercial?

Define 'direct successor'. The AE86 was a special chassis designed for a 2-door, RWD, manual sporty car that used Corolla parts. It shared very little with most other Corollas of its own generation. In fact, every "Non-AE86" Corolla, which accounted for a vast majority of Corolla sales, was front wheel drive by then and had a totally different chassis.

I get more upset that they are implying that dubstep is the music that will define my generation.

The AE86 was never like a Corolla sedan anyway, they had extremely different chassis, engine, drivetrain, and suspension components.

So you're not crazy, the 2014 Corolla sucks balls.

I think its somewhere behind all of the vapid hipsters desperately clawing for some sense of identity to make up for their own inability to care enough to succeed at life independently.

I mean, Corolla buyers.

I'm sorry, I have a lot of pent up anti-corolla rage.

Well, I am crazy, I'm just trying to gauge how crazy. But, thank you for saying what I was trying to say. The new Corolla is way different than the AE86. The AE86 is so good, and the Corolla is so beige. An AE86 doesn't need to have its day ruined by the presence of the scum of the earth (read: 2014 Toyota Corolla).

I don't even think the AE86 was that good, but it was a whole hell of a lot better than any Corolla made during or after its conception.

It will.

What other major music genre in the last 15 years has displayed characteristics unlike anything previously conceived before it?

Yeah, but......

Yes, but the Corolla brand was immediately afterward consolidates into just one chassis. That single chassis Corolla's line continues to this day.

And that's why it's amazing. It was a fairly cheap mass-market car that was actually enjoyable. It's what every Corolla should have been.

...which makes the AE86 nothing like the current Corolla's single-chassis line.

Soundgarden's peak days were 17-20 years ago. They're covered in the "90s" portion of the Corolla.

So I really don't think they could be considered part of the most recent generation of music.

It makes it a direct predecessor to the current Corolla. That's what I stated originally, no?

Okay, by "successor" I assumed you meant "the next logical step" and not "a completely new direction with the same name". It sounded like you were saying that the AE86 was the reason/origin of the Camry's qualities since the AE86 was around, which is just not true at all, as the Camry made a sudden departure right after it.

By "Successor" I meant "Official successor", which is literally exactly what it is.

what this commercial says to me is - remember how embarrassing your parents music and fashion sense is? That's what your children will think about your corolla....though out all time. Thats right potential corolla buyer, when you buy this car, your on your way to becoming your parents.

AE86 is a Corolla.

It was an affordable economy car with a stick axle.

MR2 was the sports car, and Supra was the GT. AE86 coupe was the economy coupe. Celica sort of mixed in the middle.

FT-86 should have been either mid-engined like a junior Cayman, or 6-cylinder powered, and lighter than 370Z, and thus a class-leading performer... and Subaru should have stuck to AWD with something between a 2.5RS Impreza coupe, and a Celica All-trac fastback.

AE86 Corolla is not technically the best car they could have chosen to pay homage to, and it's popularity was a function of it's affordability to teenagers to modify.

I just don't get why Corolla is anything to dance about at any given time, past or present.

Wrong.

The AE86 RWD coupe was simply a continuation of the previous RWD 70's/early 80's E70 chassis. It wasn't designed specially, it was leftovers.

A is the 4-'A'GE engine code. E is the chassis type code. 8 would be the generation code, and 6 was the body style variant code.

All E70 Corollas were RWD, E80-generation coupes (AE85 and AE86 styles) kept that hold over chassis, while E80 generation sedans went FWD. E90 Corollas were ALL FWD.

It was sort of a two-step transition process to the front-wheel-drive transverse chassis for lighter weight fuel economy, and cheaper manufacturing, because Corolla was, and still is, an ECONOMY car.

The ST160 Celica coupe followed suit, also, departing from the A-chassis, which the Supra MA70, and JZA80 chassis continued to use, separate from the FWD Celicas.
